“I think the world has enough successful people. The world needs more happy people who are also successful. And I don’t think we can achieve that unless we delve into our personal stories.”
—Mehrnaz Bassiri
Mehrnaz’s Writing

Mehrnaz’s writing has been published in the Huffington Post, Drishti Magazine, the Bombay Review, amongst others. She is the author of the memoir Approaching Midnight and a first book of poetry, My Solitude, My Secluded Wilderness.

Mehrnaz’s professional writing about overcoming obstacles and achieving success through proven strategies relies on evidence-based research and her 13 years as an educator to individuals and organizations. It also draws on her own successful application of that research.

Mehrnaz’s personal writing and poetry is an outcome of the most fundamental lesson from her unusually rich professional and personal life experience: that our life stories are the source of everything we are and the explanation for how we show up in the world at any given moment. As a result, doing the work to truly understand our own life story is essential if we are to achieve our fullest potential and be fulfilled.

“I had succeeded at my goals to become an entrepreneur and a public speaker. But that didn’t feel like a final destination and I wasn’t sure where I was supposed to go next. Through writing my personal story and experimenting with language I found a new path: poetry. It allows me to be more courageous. It allows me to express what is otherwise inexpressible. Metaphors and imagery help me to go deeper into the moment.”
—Mehrnaz Bassiri

As a trained scientist and successful entrepreneur, Mehrnaz understands the necessary emphasis we place on factual language and straightforward narratives to achieve desired outcomes—so that we can get from point A to point B. But Mehrnaz also encourages her students and her wider audience to apply a strategy of small wins towards achieving soft skills and pursuing creative endeavors. She believes that we cannot see the world in its entirety if we are looking purely through the lens of facts and science while ignoring arts, emotions, and creativity.

“Through publishing the books I want to leave bread crumbs behind for those who also feel that something is missing and want to learn how someone else took the journey that led them to a different kind of success. I want people to see that you don’t need to be a perfect writer to write. You don’t need to be a perfect poet to put your work out there. Everyone starts somewhere and improves from there.

These poems reflect my exploration of solitude and meditation over the last few years. Embracing solitude has become an unexpected but essential component of my health and wellbeing. Many people are afraid of solitude or they simply don’t know how to be in their own company. But I have found that there are endless benefits to deliberately carving out time to be purposely alone. Solitude has proven to be a way to get to know myself, reflect on my past, build stronger relationships, and live life on my own terms. I hope that this chapbook will show you the growth that takes place in stillness and pave the way for your own journey in aloneness.

    what people say
    • “I deeply enjoyed reading the profound poems in this book. The words of wisdom that are so masterfully orchestrated take you to a place for reflection. Solitude and stillness are ever more necessary in the times that we are bombarded with "noise" and the poems in this book illustrate that in a beautiful lyrical way. A very good read for those who appreciate solitude and also for those who are afraid of solitude.”

    • “Some stunning images! My favourite poem in this collection is "Where are you from?" Such a short, spare, unusual, and striking poem. "I'm from the globe of floating plates"--love the sounds and rhythm. These poems are wonderfully lyrical, and it's clear that they come from some deep personal work. I hope this collection finds more readers who are ready to engage with their own stillness and solitude and everything to be discovered there. “
